Leadership Notes
I was going over my stack of stuff this week when I realized I had a backlog of quotes. Who knows when I would get to them? They were of a cultural, Biblical, theological, and/or political interest to me. So I figured, what the heck, perhaps a few folks would find one or some of them interesting as well.
I'm calling this:
Quotes from Underground…
{Attributed to give credit where credit is due, otherwise anonymous to protect the obtuse.}
"I seem to recognize your face/Haunting, familiar yet/I can't seem to place it/Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name/Lifetimes are catching up with me…Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away/Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away."
- Dave Abbruzzese/Eddie Vedder/Jeff Ament/Michael David Mccready/
Stone C Gossard
For some reason, these lyrics speak to me, not in a sad or melancholy way, but with a gentleness that wasn't there when I first heard them.
"Not going to lie, I look up and see apostasy, compromise…it can become
quite depressing. But then I realize the goodness of God in keeping me all
these years! Be encouraged Christian and endure!"
- Kris Williams {@kdubtru}
That there is the truth of The Book of Revelation.
"The happiest people don't have the best of everything, they just make the
best of everything."
- Some Random Guy Holding Up a Sign
"The Son cried 'Abba Father' in unspeakable agony, so that we can cry
'Abba Father' in unspeakable joy."
- Owen Strachan
To that, I might add, Till on that cross as Jesus died/The wrath of God was satisfied/For every sin on Him was laid/Here in the death of Christ I live. {In Christ Alone}
"Why am I such an idiot?"
- Me {on more than one occasion}
"This is the best decision I've {we've} made all weekend! The food and
friendship are epic."
- You {on May 22, 2022 @the BodyBuildingatCovenant cookout}
"I can't believe I just paid $4.59 per gallon for gas."
- Almost Everyone Else
"If we are going to be a living, loving community, it will manifest itself in a
loyalty to Christ."
- Alistair Begg
"Go and fetch Saruman, since you have become his footman, Grima
Wormtongue!" said Gandalf. "And do not waste our time!" The window closed. They waited. Suddenly another voice spoke, low and
melodious, its very sound an enchantment. Those who listened unwarily to
that voice could seldom report the words that they heard; and if they did,
they wondered, for little power remained in them. Mostly they remembered
only that it was a delight to hear the voice speaking, all that it said seemed
wise and reasonable, and desire awoke in them by swift agreement to
seem wise themselves. When others spoke they seemed harsh and
uncouth by contrast; and if they gainsaid the voice, anger was kindled in
the hearts of those under the spell. For some the spell lasted only while the
voice spoke to them, and when it spake to another they smiled, as men do
who see through a juggler's trick while others gape at it. For many the
sound of the voice alone was enough to hold them enthralled; but for
those whom it conquered the spell endured when they were far away, and
ever they heard that soft voice whispering and urging them. But none were
unmoved; none rejected its pleas and its commands without an effort of
mind and will, so long as its master had control of it.
- J.R.R. Tolkien
"Healthy lifestyle may increase life expectancy, research
suggests."
- May 3, 2022, The Washington Post, {and yes, I wish I were making that
up}
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who
are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the
wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”
- The Apostle Paul, 1 Corinthians 1:18-19
"We will work together, and continue to work together, to address these
issues, to tackle these challenges, and to work together as we continue to
work operating from the new norms, rules, and agreements, that we will
convene to work together. We will work together."
- Anonymous {May 16, 2022}
"You want to bring down inflation? Let's make sure the wealthiest
corporations pay their fair share."
- Anonymous {May 13, 2022}*
"A sinner does not decide for Christ; the sinner flies to Christ in utter
helplessness and despair."
- Martyn Lloyd-Jones
"As a former foster kid, I would rather be alive and have a chance than
dead."
- Christina
"Married life is not all sugar, but grace in the heart will keep away most of
the sours."
- Charles Spurgeon {and by extension, that applies to most other
relationships}
"Of course you see the sin, weakness and failures of others more clearly
than you see your own. Sin blinds and guess who it blinds first?"
- Paul David Tripp
"Through a tree we were made debtors to God; so through a tree we have
our debt canceled."
- Irenaeus
And finally, the fruit of knowing that truth:
"Dear Christians - One day, we will see Jesus face to face and be in his
presence forever. May your sleep be peaceful tonight."
- Rudy Cerda
