Leadership Notes

Happy last Wednesday of October. And what a lovely October it’s been. Yesterday {Monday, October 26} I sat out on our deck, reading, for about two hours. I’m currently reading a book on “How the Scots Invented Everything.” The maple tree in our backyard is in full red resplendent glory. Barely a breeze. In the almost 36 years we’ve lived in Tecumseh, I don’t think there’s been a more beautiful October. God is good all the time…

Words cannot begin to express my thanks and appreciation for your outpouring of kindness and generosity for Lori and I last Sunday. More than you will ever know, it is an honor and privilege to be allowed to be pastor of Covenant Church. You are rooted in the Good News of Jesus Christ. As I said Sunday, the best way to sum things up is right here, right now, there’s no place on earth I’d rather be.

I resonate with Paul when in Philippians 1:3-7, he writes:

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every

prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of

your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I

am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it

to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel

this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are

all partakers with me of grace.”

We are not a large church. We are not a flashy or showy church. We don’t rely on gimmicks or trends. We really are a simple people who:

> Love God.

> Treasure Jesus Christ above anything else.

> Sincere worship…o, how I love the way we sing!

> Love each other.

> Love our community.

That is a wonderful way to be. As we begin our journey through Colossians, we will see points of connection between then and now…how we are growing as a church sincere in its devotion to Jesus as well as deepening our foundation into Biblical truth. Life is good because God is good…all the time.

There is something I forgot to mention at our donut and apple cider shindig. I am leaving time in my weekly schedule open for talks and conversations. Call or text or email and we’ll make plans to get together. I love sharing our lives together. My door is always open.

We are who we are as a community of faith because God’s sovereign purpose is working in our lives. To Him goes all the glory, and honor, and praise. Your openness…our openness to what God wills to do in us, through us, and for us, is a beautiful thing to behold. Thank you for being the fertile ground in which God plants His Gospel Truth.

Finally, the following observation by pastor and author Scott Roberts speaks to where we are as a church:

“CHRISTIANITY IS NOT MADE STRONGER BY MAKING IT LESS

OFFENSIVE:

> THE GOSPEL CONFRONTS OUR PRIDE.

> SCRIPTURE CONFRONTS OUR SIN.

> CHRIST DEMANDS OUR ALLEGIANCE.

> REPENTANCE REQUIRES CHANGE.

THE TRUTH DOES NOT BECOME LOVING BY BECOMING VAGUE.

I thank God daily that you are living out of these principles. We are strong people of God because we know our Savior is praying for us and keeping us strong. There is nothing wishy-washy about Covenant Church. We are right where God wants us to be. And for that, we can give thanks!

     With Much Love and Affection…Richard
