God is Good, So Good

Leadership Notes
Someone has said that our weather these past five days has been the best weather on the planet. And I couldn’t agree more. As Psalm 8 declares:
O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
I don’t know about you, but I feel unworthy of the blessings of these days. Yet here we are. God is so, so good.
Basking in the glory of these early fall days, it’s time to fire up the old quote machine. How’s that for a segue?
After their victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Monday night, Chicago Bears back-up quarterback Case Keenum said:
“All glory to God. I’m not here without Him. He’s put me here.
He’s made me for this. I’m so thankful for Him.”
Here’s the mini-devotion I shared in worship on Sunday:
GOOD MORNING, BROTHERS AND SISTERS!
GOD IS STILL SOVEREIGN.
CHRIST IS STILL KING.
THE BIBLE IS STILL TRUE.
THE GOSPEL STILL SAVES.
HIS GRACE IS STILL SUFFICIENT.
AND JESUS IS STILL COMING AGAIN.
WHATEVER THIS DAY BRINGS, TRUST IN THE LORD AND STAND
FIRM.
SOLI DEO GLORIA!
- Scott Roberts
How many of you remember Jars of Clay? They were a contemporary
Christian band with crossover appeal. Their name is from 2 Corinthians 4:7:
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the
surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.
Smashing Pumpkins, appropriate band name for this time of year, was an alternative band whose music I also liked.
Here’s the irony. Someone recently observed:
“If you had told me when I was in high school in the 1990s that
someday the lead singer of Jars of Clay would say, ‘I’m no longer
sure who God is,’ and the lead singer of Smashing Pumpkins
would say, ‘Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior,’ I would have spit
out my Slim Fast and stained my flannel shirt.”
Here’s another mini-devotional from the same Mr. Roberts:
THE OLDER I GET, THE MORE CONVINCED I BECOME:
- GOD IS HOLY.
- SIN IS SERIOUS.
- LIFE IS SHORT.
- ETERNITY IS REAL.
- SCRIPTURE IS SUFFICIENT, INERRANT, AND
AUTHORITATIVE.
- GRACE IS ASTONISHING.
- JESUS CHRIST IS EVERYTHING.
Finally, to all those who provided delicious provisions and/or enjoyed said deliciousness for our potluck on Sunday, a huge and hearty “Thank you!” It was a full house and a great way to end our Sunday morning. And then the Lions won! Could it have been any sweeter?
And now, your Moment of Spurgeon:
“Have you ever received HIM, the Lord Jesus, the real Christ? Do
you talk to him? Do you know him? Is he a companion? Is he a
friend of yours? If you have received a personal Christ by
confiding, trusting, and depending upon him, you are on the safe
side of the house.”
With Much Love and Affection,
Richard
