Leadership Notes
I’ve watched every Super Bowl ever played. If you’re a football fan, what a time to be alive. On the other hand, Sunday’s game could quite possibly be the worst Super Bowl ever. And that counts the blowouts. In fact, rumor has it that, in Super Bowl XXIX {1995}, where the 49ers dropped 49 points on the Chargers, San Francisco continued scoring weeks after the game ended.
Anyway, I think, culturally, we’re at the point where football is too big to fail. In other words, it doesn’t matter what they do or don’t do, idiots like me are going to continue to watch. Professional football seems to have captured the zeitgeist of the past fifty years or so.
But none of this is the point. The biggest point is the potluck we had after worship. And the Souper Bowl fundraiser. God does amazing things in the life of Covenant Church. As one of my all-time favorite worship songs puts it, “Our God is an awesome God.” And so we praise Him. We prepared great food to share with each other. The varieties and deliciousnesses were unmatched. The fellowship/interaction/conversation affirmed what a loving community of faith God is building here. I love when we gather around food. A special thanks for those who set it all up. It was a flawless after- worship experience.
But that’s not the most important point. The best thing is you all raised almost $1200.00 to go toward helping provide food for folks in Lenawee County. Your generosity honors our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. “We love, because he first loved us…”
Also on Sunday, our prayer time in worship was guided by words of affirmation from pastor and author Shane Pruitt. Here’s what he and his wife learned from watching their ten-year-old son, Titus, die after dealing with a lifetime of disability challenges:
GOD IS STILL GOOD, WHEN I DON’T UNDERSTAND.
GOD IS STILL FAITHFUL, WHEN IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE.
GOD STILL HAS A PLAN, WHEN I CAN’T SEE IT.
GOD STILL REIGNS, WHEN THINGS LOOK LIKE CHAOS.
GOD IS STILL NEAR, WHEN I CAN’T FEEL HIM.
GOD IS STILL GOD.
That is a wonderful prayerful affirmation to keep with us always.
And now, your Moment of Spurgeon:
Better to go to Heaven Alone,
Than to hell with a herd.
With Much Love and Affection,
Richard
